Oil on the stove that caught fire burned the kitchen of a home in Washougal on Wednesday evening.

The oil was left cooking unattended for a few minutes and caught the nearby cabinets on fire, said Camas-Washougal Fire Department Battalion Chief Mark Ervin. The fire spread through the rest of the kitchen, burning the appliances and spreading to the ceiling.

The family got out of the house and called 911 at 5:46 p.m. Firefighters arrived to the two-story house, 609 20th St., and quickly put out the fire with extinguishers and water, Ervin said. They prevented the fire from spreading to the second floor.

With the kitchen heavily damaged and smoke damage throughout the house, the family is staying with relatives for a couple of days, Ervin said.
