Community notebook: Morales brothers to compete at boxing Junior Olympics

Brothers Victor Morales, Jr., and Tyler Morales of Vancouver are competing this week at the U.S.A. Boxing Junior Olympic National Championships in Charleston, W.Va.

They qualified through regional competition.

Tyler Morales is competing in the light flyweight (106-pound) weight class. Victor Morales is fighting in the bantamweight (119-pound) division.

Victor Morales won a championship in January at the USA Boxing Junior Open. He is a member of the USA Boxing Junior National Team.

Girls soccer team at regional event

The Washington Timbers Green, a team of girls born in 1997, is playing in the U.S. Youth Soccer Region IV Presidents Cup tournament Wednesday through Sunday in Morgan Hill, Calif.

The team earned a berth to the 12-team regional tournament by winning the Virginia Mason Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup tournament for the girls under-16 age division.

The Timbers open the tournament at 8 a.m. Wednesday against a team from Logan, Utah. On Thursday at 8 a.m. they face a team from San Diego United. On Friday at 8 a.m., they take on a Colorado Rush team.

Elimination play begins Friday with championship matches on Sunday.

Rower heads to junior nationals

Gabi White will represent Vancouver Lake Crew at the U.S. Rowing Youth National Championships, which take place Friday through Sunday on Lake Natoma, near Rancho Cordova, Calif.

A junior at Columbia River High School, White qualified for the junior nationals by taking third place in the girls varsity single scull finals during the Pacific Northwest Regional Junior Championships in May on Vancouver Lake.

CCRC run draws 124

Oscar Bauman of Vancouver won the second race in the Clark County Running Club’s series of Wednesday 5-kilometer runs.

Bauman, 41, finished the June 15 David Douglas Park 5K in 16 minutes, 15 seconds. He was 45 seconds in front of runner-up Jesse McChesney of Vancouver. Shannon Porter of Washougal (18:44) was the first woman to finish.

A total of 124 runners finished the run. A complete list of results is in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

After two weeks on the David Douglas course, the series shifts for the next two Wednesdays to a 3-mile course that starts and finishes at Heritage High School. The races start at 7 p.m. Runners should arrive at least 20 minutes early to sign up. Clark County Running Club races cost $2 to enter and are free for CCRC members.

Scavenger race slated for June 21

Registration is open for the June 21 Summer Solstice Urban Scavenger Race in downtown Vancouver. The event, which can be run as a team or an individual, includes a 15-station course. Clues at each station lead participants to the next stop.

The race starts at 5 p.m. and ends at 7 p.m. Advance registration costs $40, $20 for ages 16 and younger.
