BOARDMAN, Ore. — Portland General Electric has started building a natural gas-fired power plant in Boardman. The plant is located next to a coal-fired power plant that is slated to close or be converted to a different fuel source by 2020.

The East Oregonian reports that the natural gas plant is part of PGE’s 2009 integrated resource plan to meet increased energy demand over the next 20 years. The new Carty Generating Station will produce enough electricity to power about 300,000 residential customers when it opens in two years. It will be the company’s second natural gas plant in Boardman.
