CAMAS — Several years after going up for sale, the downtown Camas Post Office building still has no buyers, and the U.S. Postal Service has taken it off the market.

In a recent email to The Camas-Washougal Post-Record, postal service spokesman Peter Haas said the building is no longer for sale. Haas’ message was brief, but he said the building, located at 440 N.E. Fifth Ave., will remain open for the postal service’s retail operations.

The small brick building, which is 75 years old, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. Looking to save money in tough times for the postal service, the agency began looking for buyers back in 2010.

Several potential buyers showed interest over the years, but none followed through. During the recession, nearby business owners voiced concerns about closing down another building in a struggling downtown, an area that has recovered since.
