UPDATE: Wynston Alberts didn’t quite reach his goal for Sunday’s Vancouver USA Marathon.

The 43-year-old who lives in Tokyo hoped to finish in under 2 hours and 30 minutes. He missed that by 15 seconds, but won the fourth edition of the race by more than six minutes and set a new Vancouver USA Marathon record.

“I went out too fast,” said Alberts, a former All-American cross country runner at West Virginia who grew up in Roseburg, Ore.

Tonya Lutz from Salem, Ore. was the women’s champion posting a time of 2:57:01. Kristi Lachenmeier from Camas was the second woman to finish the marathon. Her time was 3:02:54.

Mike Mazzotta of Camas was the first Clark County resident to finish the marathon. He was eighth in 2:55:13.

More than 1,000 runners started the 26.2-mile race at 7 a.m. Another 2,000 or so started the 13.1-mile half marathon at 9 a.m. The courses remain open until 2 p.m.

Jesse McChesney of Vancouver won the half-marathon. His winning time was 1:16:39, but that included more than five minutes waiting for a train near Wintler Park. Lauren Johnson of Portland won the women’s half marathon in 1:20:16.

The courses closed at 2 p.m.

The races meant road closures on Sunday in downtown Vancouver, in addition to west along Lower River Road, and as far east as Wintler Park just off Highway 14. The course map and list of road closures are posted at www.vancouverusamarathon.com.
