Eagle Island boat launch on N. Fork of Lewis River to tempoaririly close

WOODLAND — Eagle Island boat launch and parking lot on the lower North Fork of the Lewis River will be closed to the public beginning Monday while being used as a staging area for a habitat restoration project.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, which owns the launch, will have the site closed while a helicopter hoists logs stockpiled in the parking lot and positions them in the river for habitat for young steelhead and salmon.

“The boat launch will reopen just as soon as the log work is completed,” said John Weinheimer, a department fish biologist.

The Cowlitz Tribe is doing the restoration project with money from the Washington State Salmon Recovery Funding Board and PacifiCorp.

The logs provide refuge for juvenile fish during high streamflows, Weinheimer said.
