Letter: Paranoia fired up by media

The Columbian
Published: June 22, 2014, 5:00pm

In his letter of June 18, “Deaths by guns escalating,” Roy G. Wilson appears, not unlike many others, to be unaware of the actual statistics on “deaths by guns” lately.

Jake Tapper of CNN (not known for its conservatism) interviewed Prof. James A. Fox of Northeastern University, who has done some very important research on gun violence and is a “foremost authority” on the subject. The professor states that gun-control advocates claim that gun violence and mass shootings are worse today than ever before. He states, “this gun paranoia is demonstrably false. . . . Gun violence is actually down dramatically in recent years and mass shootings have remained remarkably stable over 30 years or so.” So says an expert.

The media is helping build the paranoia. I have never purchased a firearm from a dealer or at a gun show without having a background check done.

I would ask Wilson if he is one who has a closed mind to the realities of “gun violence.” People kill people. The gun didn’t do it. One of my sons was a victim of a shooting some years ago. I did not blame the gun. I blamed the man who did it.

Rationality and correct information negates paranoia.
