Letter: Strengthening registration is start

Richard Willerton’s June 17 letter, “Civilization is what’s out of control” suggests demanding any form of action on gun control is an example of fixing a Band-Aid rather than treating the cancer we ignore. He stated, “Today, our ‘civilization’ is a glossy veneer covering a cancerous sore of envy, resentment, bitterness and hatred.”

If all members of our society immediately agreed with Willerton’s assessment of “our civilization” and agreed on a course of action to change it, there would be many years before those changes could begin to cut down on guns in the hands of mentally unstable people.

Right now, we need some solid concrete ways to help alleviate this gun problem. Background checks put only a slight limit on our “right to bear arms” but would immediately make it a bit more difficult for mentally unstable people to get their hands on weapons. Will this completely solve the problem? Of course not. But it is something real that we can do change the situation.

Let’s stop pointing out everything that is wrong and who or what is to blame and start trying to think of workable solutions to problems we see in our society.
