As the Fourth of July approaches, the U.S. Forest Service this week warned that fireworks of any kind are prohibited on national forestlands, including the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Fireworks and campfires can spark wildfires if proper caution is not exercised. This year, a drier-than-usual June has helped give wildfire season a fast start, according to regional fire officials.

The state Department of Natural Resources issued a similar warning. Last year, fireworks caused 27 wildfires on public and private lands that DNR keeps watch on, according to the agency. Fireworks are also prohibited on DNR-managed lands.

Fireworks go on sale in many areas of Clark County starting Saturday, the first day they can be legally discharged in some places. In Vancouver, sales don’t start until July 2, and fireworks can only be discharged on July 4.
