PORTLAND — The westbound lanes of Interstate 84 are closed in Eastern Oregon while the wreckage from a series of crashes is cleared.

The State Police said two people have died. They were in separate vehicles involved in crashes in icy conditions Sunday night on Cabbage Hill, southeast of Pendleton. At least six semitrailer trucks were involved.

The stretch through the Blue Mountains can be treacherous in winter. It’s where a tour bus plunged down a hillside in 2012, killing nine people and injuring 38.

An Oregon Department of Transportation spokesman, Tom Strandberg, says the westbound lanes are closed from Ontario to Pendleton but could reopen by afternoon.

Overnight, authorities closed the eastbound lanes to let backed-up cars get around the wreckage. They planned to do the same Monday for trucks.
