Letter: Launch effort to overturn ruling

The Columbian
Published: March 4, 2014, 4:00pm

We often hear from people on the left and right that we need to “take our country back.” The frustration of ordinary people working to make a living in a dysfunctional political environment is understandable. We feel crushed by taxes; we find it hard to save; we want the hugely expensive wars to end but they don’t, and our members of Congress do not pay attention to the interests of ordinary people.

Who is running our government and from whom do we need to take it back? Increasingly, over the last 40 years, big money is running our government for the interests of the ultra-wealthy, and unless we can negate the influence of big money in politics soon, we will have neither a democracy nor a republic; we will have an oligarchy (rule by the ultra-wealthy few).

Please consider joining a local nonpartisan, all-volunteer group of your fellow citizens as we work to get an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which will overturn the effect of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling and start to push back the tide of big money influencing government.

We are meeting at 7 p.m. March 7 at the Hazel Dell Round Table Pizza at 616 N.E. 81st St.Please join us.
