A Ridgefield man caused a second crash after he allegedly tried to film the scene of a fatal wreck while he was driving, according to Washington State Patrol.

Devin Braithwaite, 19, was driving a 2011 Dodge Charger south on Interstate 5 near Northeast 179th Street on Friday night when he approached the scene of an earlier fatal crash, according to State Patrol Trooper Will Finn.

At about 11:30 p.m., Sergey A. Bondarchuk, 18, of Vancouver struck a tree with his 1997 Acura sedan. He was later declared dead at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center, according to State Patrol.

While passing by, Braithwaite tried to record the scene with his cellphone, Finn said. Braithwaite’s vehicle then struck the vehicle in front of him and nearly hit a trooper in a patrol vehicle and another trooper standing nearby, Finn said.

The driver of the vehicle that Braithwaite struck, Mawlid Abdulleh, 23, of Oregon, was taken to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center with spinal pain. Abdulleh’s condition was unavailable Wednesday.

Braithwaite was cited for reckless driving and reckless endangerment of emergency workers.
