Letter: Augment tech tools to retain focus

Vancouver Public Schools, and districts all over the country, are slowly implementing more technology into everyday classroom activities.

The latest technology that Vancouver is investing in is iPads. They are currently in some middle schools, and are being implemented in high schools and elementary schools. Some parents believe that the use of iPads in schools is unnecessary, but it can help to gain the interest of students, as well as help teachers support their curriculum with online activities.

Studies show that the average American child spends more than seven hours a day using “gadgets” such as iPods, iPads, and smartphones. These statistics spark parent concern about adding more time to this already large amount spent using technology. Another concern is how teachers will supervise the use of iPads and balance the use of these devices with hands-on activities.

Implementing new technology will be successful if we create a plan for success. There should be a time limit of one hour spent using iPads during the school day, which will ensure that students spend the majority of the school day focused on their teachers. Parents should have an open mind with the idea of using technology in schools.
