SALEM, Ore.— Salem could ban the sale of pets along sidewalks and curbs.
City Councilor Chuck Bennett says it’s cruel. At Monday’s meeting he asked the city staff to investigate an ordinance that would ban pet sales in the public right-of-way.
The Statesman Journal reports several people spoke in favor of a ban.
The president of the Coalition Advocating for Animals, Lora Meisner, said allowing animals to be sold at curbside “allows backyard breeders and puppy mills to succeed.”
Volunteer animal rescuer, Melinda Rossow, told the council that impulse pet buys become animals in need of rescue.
Susan Carey of the Willamette Humane Society said she has witnessed children handing out kittens to other children.
