In response to Jim Souder's March 6 letter "Can Democrats be Christians?," Jesus would have been a Democrat, not a Republican.
The basis of Christ's teaching is "Do unto others," not law-of-the-jungle, unregulated greed. In fact, he chased the greedy money changers out of the temple. He was a champion of the poor and underprivileged, not of the rich and corrupt. His message was that of love and peace, not of hate and war. He fed the poor; he did not cut their food stamps. He healed the sick; he did not oppose health care for them.
Read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). Could you imagine any Republican saying that today? How can any conservative Republican claim that they follow Christ and not feel like a total hypocrite?
