Spotlight on Youth

SkillsUSA competition

Students from Vancouver Public Schools competed with students from around the U.S. at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference last month in Kansas City, Mo. These students scored high in the competition and were awarded certificates:

Andrew Bepler, Fort Vancouver High School, earned a certificate in pin design.

Daisy Vargas, Fort Vancouver High School, earned a certificate in commercial baking.

Miguel Gutierrez; Andrew Martinez; Wright Miller; Preston Mobley; Jeremy Olsen; Christian Ruiz; Amy Rushforth and, a team from Fort Vancouver High School, earned a certificate in opening and closing ceremonies.

Daniel Daller; Ian David; Casey Decker; Ryan Marsh, a team from Columbia River High School, earned a certificate in broadcast news production.

2014 DO-IT Scholars Summer Study Program

Calleese Henderson of Vancouver is participating in the 2014 DO-IT Scholars Summer Study Program for 10 days at The University of Washington’s Seattle campus. The program — which stands for Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, and Technology — selects scholars with disabilities, and who wish to pursue higher education, to stay on campus and learn about college life, academic programs, and how to be mentors to students. The students learn about careers in fields including science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
