COOS BAY, Ore. — A California prison inmate has been charged in a Coos Bay rape that occurred more than six years ago.

The World newspaper reports that 43-year-old Peter Shianna was lodged in the Coos County Jail and faces charges of rape and sexual abuse.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Mark Monson said a woman reported being raped on Christmas Eve 2007. The alleged attack occurred behind a Fred Meyer store.

The woman had met the man on a bus, but could not identify him. The case went cold until a forensic lab contacted Coos Bay police last year to say they had gotten a DNA hit from a California inmate serving time for a similar offense.

Monson says Shianna admitted having sex with the woman, but contends it was consensual.
