Roundup: Union rugby tops Battle Ground

The win improved Union to 3-0 atop the Varsity Premiership Division. Battle Ground is 2-1.

Union scored all of its points in the second half after Battle Ground led 3-0.

Scoring five-point tries for Union were Brendon Curle, Leon Siofele, Samuel Berry and Austin Holloway. Tyler Dione kicked two conversions. Union next plays against defending champion Reynolds at 1 p.m. on the April 5 at Delta Park in Portland.

Prairie 18, Newberg 12 — Reid Maahs, Aaron Jacques and Adam Ayale scored tries and Jack Fletcher added a penalty kick as the Prairie Wolf Pack topped visiting Newberg on Saturday at Laurin Middle School. Prairie (2-1) has a share of second place in the Varsity Premiership. Prairie plays rival Battle Ground at 5:45 p.m. at Laurin Middle School.

Clark County Red 65, Bend 7 — By winning in Bend, Ore., Clark County remained unbeaten in the Club Championship Division for rugby teams that draw players from more than one high school.

The Clark County Red team is one of three with 3-0 records. Bend fell to 2-1. The next match for Clark County Red is at 11 a.m. on April 5 against West Linn at Skyridge Middle School in Camas.

Linn Benton 24, Clark County Black 12 — The Clark County squad of first-year players lost in Albany, falling to 1-2 on the season. Clark County Black next plays at 12:30 p.m. on April 5 at Skyridge Middle School against Polk County.

Battle Ground Lady Pack 48, Linn-Benton 20 — At Albany, the Battle Ground girls rugby team improved to 1-1-1 with its first victory of the season. The match was played 12 on 12 because Linn Benton was short of players.

Battle Ground next plays at 10 a.m. on April 5 against Grant or Portland at Delta Park.
