Letter: Inadequate cars open to accidents

Reported in the April 23 story “Rail industry rep: Tank cars not right for crude,” a rail industry representative testifying at a safety hearing in Washington, D.C., stated, “None of the tank cars currently in service carrying Bakken crude oil is adequate for handling that product.” Stop and ponder that statement.

Proponents of the oil terminals would have us believe that Tesoro will be really, really careful and that we should allow these tank cars, carrying 380,000 barrels of highly flammable crude per day, to pass through Vancouver.

I submit that accidents do happen. That is why they are called accidents. Tesoro and Savage also claim that those who oppose the oil terminal are doing so based on emotions, not facts. Let me repeat this fact: “None of the tank cars currently in service carrying Bakken crude oil is adequate for handling that product.” Any questions?
