Letter: Beware limitless presidential power

Under the National Defense Resources Preparedness Executive Order, President Barack Obama has given himself the power to declare martial law under any circumstances, whatsoever, which means he has virtually unlimited power. At any moment, he can declare martial law and suspend elections, prevent Congress from convening, force the Supreme Court to recess, and even deploy American troops to enforce his dictates on American citizens.

A clause in the National Defense Authorization Act permits the indefinite detention of American citizens (suspected of acts of terrorism) without trial or legal recourse — and there are hundreds of Federal Emergency Management Agency camps, already built, capable of holding millions of political dissidents.

Obama has staged an unprecedented power grab on a scale never before seen in our nation’s history. Dare we trust Obama (or any future president for that matter) with such unlimited power?
