The Clark Regional Wastewater District Board of Commissioners has approved the construction of a new wastewater pipeline connecting Ridgefield to the Salmon Creek Treatment Plant, the agency announced this week.

The board awarded a $19.7 million contract to Tapani Underground of Battle Ground, which will build the first phase of the Discovery Corridor Wastewater Transmission System. Work will begin in June and be completed by 2016, according to the wastewater district. The project is funded by a state Department of Ecology grant and low-interest loans from the Washington State Public Works Trust Fund.

The pipeline will connect to the Ridgefield-Interstate 5 junction area. The city’s existing sewer treatment plant will reach capacity in the coming years, and the project will allow for continued growth in the region, according to the wastewater district.
