Letter: Moral strength of Owens defended

The Columbian
Published: May 11, 2014, 5:00pm

The May 3 story reported “Sheriff hopefuls agree on gun lockers: One candidate has sued the office over quality of home firearms storage.” I met Ed Owens a few days after the shooting death of his and his wife’s 3-year-old son. They told me about the faulty lock on their firearms safe. Owens said that the manufacturer had recalled firearm safes because of the defect. Owens’ firing was an outrageous and emotionally cruel miscarriage of justice. Instead of rallying in support of their colleague in a time of tragedy and acknowledging the safes’ defective locks, the sheriff’s office claimed Owens was terminated for coercing his stepdaughter to confess to the shooting. It’s a travesty that this distortion of facts still is being covered up.

Clark County needs Ed Owens as our sheriff, one whose honesty, moral integrity, spiritual strength and courage are unquestioned.
