High of 91 expected today

If you’re near the window today, a quick glance outside will confirm we are on the way toward the hottest day of 2014 thus far.

The National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 91 degrees today for Vancouver.

By 2 p.m. the temperature had reached 84 degrees, eight degrees warmer than the same time on Tuesday. Tuesday’s high was 84 degrees.

The record for today, by the way, is an unpleasant 94 degrees, set in 1939, when there would have been very little air conditioning. (Willis Carrier is credited with inventing the first modern electrical air conditioning unit in 1902.)

Unlike 1939, when the heat wave subsided on May 15, we have a couple of more warm days in store. The forecast high is 86 degrees on Thursday (the record that day is only 87 degrees, so we could threaten it) and 75 on Friday.

Yes, cool showers are still in the weekend forecast. Sigh.

Now, quit looking out the window and go back to work.
