Letter: Critics disregard any compassion

The Columbian
Published: May 13, 2014, 5:00pm

Again another letter arrives, chastising those un-Christian Republicans for their inhumane treatment of the poor and downtrodden, using Christ as an example. The self-righteous socialist critics fail to notice or deliberately avoid the truth that Jesus Christ called for voluntary charity and compassion to come from the heart.

He did not consider a mandatory government edict, punishable by law if not obeyed, to be compassionate or charitable.

In reference to Republicans being in bed with the moneylenders of Wall Street, no doubt there are as many, if not more, Democrats in the same position. Perhaps someone could print an objective discourse on the fine line between promoting dependency on government (involuntary distribution of wealth) and true charity.
