Letter: Own up to liability for care of pet

Animal abuse is cruel and awful. Animals are more than just household pets, they are family. These important members of the family don’t deserve to be abused or neglected by their owners. Many of them deserve more understanding and better owners to live with.

According to www.humanesociety.org, nearly 1 million animals a year are abused or killed due to domestic violence. The unofficial estimates, however, are much higher.

Although the most current statistics I could find are from 2007, it still reflects a common trend. When it comes to animal abuse, dogs have the highest percentage at 64.5 percent, followed by cats at 18 percent. What most people may not realize is that abuse does not just mean hurting the animal, it can also mean neglect of their basic needs and abandonment.

In order to improve this situation, we should look at what causes these circumstances. Having stricter requirements for buying pets and surprise checkups on breeding facilities could help improve the problem.

Before buying an animal, everybody should ask themselves, “Can I provide and care for this animal in stressful circumstances?” If the answer is not a truthful “yes,” then don’t buy the animal.
