Tim Martinez: Clark County is ready for state soccer

Tim Martinez: High schools

The high school boys soccer state tournament is upon us.

We know which of our local teams will be playing at state. We even know who their opponents will be.

We just don’t know when these teams will be playing, or where for that matter.

Well, at least not for most of the teams scheduled to play games outside of Clark County this week.

And that’s because we have outstanding administrators and coaches who are on the ball when it comes to scheduling state playoff games locally and communicating those schedules promptly.

Wouldn’t it be great if administrators and coaches around the state were as great as the ones we have here in Clark County?

That way we wouldn’t have to play the waiting game every year, in which we don’t find out until Monday when and where games will be played, even though some may be played as soon as Tuesday.

Oh well. Here are the playoff soccer games that we know about. The rest will have to wait until Monday.

In the 4A boys state tournament, Camas will open its 16th consecutive trip to the state playoffs at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Moses Lake.

Also at 4A, Skyview will host Wenatchee at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Kiggins Bowl.

At 3A, Columbia River will play the back end of a doubleheader at Kiggins Bowl on Wednesday when the Chieftains face Shorecrest at 7 p.m.

And at 2A, Ridgefield will host Sedro-Woolley at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Among the games listed under TBA are Mountain View at Mercer Island (3A), Hockinson at Fife (2A) and Seton Catholic at Bellevue Christian (1A). All of those games could be played Tuesday or Wednesday.

Looking ahead to the quarterfinals — which could be played Friday or Saturday — Camas, Mountain View and Ridgefield will play in Clark County should they win in the first round. Skyview, Columbia River, Hockinson and Seton Catholic will have to venture out of the county in the quarterfinals. Except if Mountain View wins in the first round, then River will face Mountain View in the quarters.

Baseball

Four area teams advanced to the state regionals on Saturday. Teams need to win twice on Saturday to reach the Final Four next weekend.

In Class 4A, Battle Ground heads to the Tacoma Regional at Heidelberg Park to meet Gonzaga Prep of Spokane. Union heads to the Yakima Regional to face Moses Lake.

Columbia River advanced to the 3A Bellevue Regional to meet Mountlake Terrace.

And at 1A, Woodland heads back to the Castle Rock Regional to meet Charles Wright Academy of Tacoma.

Softball

Bi-district and district tournaments are on the schedule this week.

Union, Camas and Battle Ground play in the 4A bi-district tournament at Kent Service Fields on Friday and Saturday.

Prairie, Columbia River and Mountain View are in the 3A bi-district tournament at Sprinker Fields in Tacoma, also on Friday and Saturday.

Ridgefield and Washougal play in the 2A district tournament Thursday and Friday at Fort Borst Park in Centralia.

And Woodland, La Center and Stevenson will be in the 1A district tournament Wednesday and Saturday at Fort Borst.
