Letter: Ballot box is fourth branch

The Columbian
Published: May 18, 2014, 5:00pm

There are now special interest groups who do not want people to vote. The rationale is that only certain people know what’s best for our country. But that is not the way we are set up. The ballot box is the fourth leg of our system of government.

Our three branches of government, the Legislative, the Supreme Court and the Executive are each a check on each other. When these three branches seek to live by the rule of law, that is, government of and for and by the people, there is a balance of power.

The Executive is allowed two four-year terms, and then the voters get to choose a new Executive. Representatives and senators have to stand to be elected or defeated as the voters direct.

Supreme Court rulings may be overturned by the people, which has happened at least seven times over the many years. There is now a movement to end a Supreme Court ruling of 2010 and a more recent one. Per the court, money is political speech. It didn’t used to be that way.

There is human capital to be considered. The people have some wisdom to bring about a balance of power. Power not shared welcomes tyranny. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
