Hope. It’s a simple yet profound concept.
This letter is an expression of what the Affordable Care Act, or Obama-care, means to me. I have been living with diabetes since diagnosis when I was 7. Since then, I have had a different perception of hope than those who do not have a chronic disease.
I had lived 22 years worrying about insurance.
Will the job that I apply for offer decent enough benefits? If I pursue this path, how will I afford my insulin? How can I spend time abroad? How can I intern for this person if they don’t offer pay and benefits? These are all questions I lived with every time I thought about working for the American Dream.
The ACA is not perfect, I will not make that argument. There are several questions that are yet to be resolved. However, because I can now pursue goals without the shadow of the insurance industry clouding my judgment or preventing me from taking risks, I feel that diabetes cannot be a hindrance to my pursuit.
It is my belief that all people deserve an equal opportunity at working toward the life they deserve. Obamacare provides me with that opportunity.
