Board to honor public health award winner

The Clark County Board of Health will recognize Laurie Cornelius for promoting community initiatives to improve the health of children and families.

Cornelius will receive the 2014 Public Health Community Award at the board’s monthly meeting at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Public Service Center, 1300 Franklin St., Vancouver.

Cornelius is the director of services for Children and Families at Clark College, where she oversees the Oliva Family Early Learning Center, the largest training ground for child care providers in Southwest Washington. She has helped shape the center’s outdoor learning space and secured financing to address childhood obesity through a nutrition and movement program.

Honorable mention recipients are Michelle Ahmed of Sea Mar Community Health Centers; David Bilby of Go Connect; Clark County farms; Sandy Mathewson of Educational Service District 112; Southwest Washington Health Care-Associated Infections Task Force; and Washington State University Extension Food Safety and Nutrition Program.
