The May 16 story “Program assesses teachers’ readiness” is a great article that I feel everyone should check out. Becoming a public school teacher takes a lot of dedication that I’m sure a large majority of people don’t realize. This article outlines the years of study teachers are required to have and the difficult exams they need to pass before they can even get a teaching certificate.
I personally feel teachers do not get enough recognition for all the hard work they put in to train the upcoming leaders of America. That is why teachers deserve a higher pay. According to a handout (www.k12.wa.us/safs/pub/per/salallocschedule.pdf) provided by the state of Washington, new teachers with their BA degree are only earning $34,048 a year. I don’t understand how after four years of college a person earning that amount would even be able to live comfortably. I believe teachers deserve more for all the time they put in not only to become educators, but the amount of time they spend preparing your children for the future.
