McLoughlin Middle School will celebrate its 70th birthday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 3.

Former and current students, families and the public are invited to attend the free celebration at the school, 5802 MacArthur Blvd.

In addition to classroom tours, guests can view photos, uniforms, yearbooks and other memorabilia. Student artwork will be on display, and students will perform music and dances honoring the school’s cultural diversity.

The original school was completed in July 1943 and served many families of Kaiser Shipyard workers during World War II. The current building opened in 1956 and was partially remodeled in 1992.

In 2007, the school piloted the national college prep Advancement Via Individual Determination program. Now about 1,000 students in 13 Vancouver Public Schools participate in AVID.
