Letter: Demonstrate humility after victory

The Columbian

Here is a heartfelt message for all the politicians who find themselves elected to public office come Nov. 5. First off, I congratulate all of you. Secondly, this is a time for feelings of humility and not vindication.

A landslide victory with 60 percent of the votes cast and with 55 percent of registered voters voting means that two-thirds of the registered voters did not vote for you. (This type of math exercise is part of the Common Core curriculum so I hope everybody got the right answer.)

You, as an elected officer, are in office to represent and work for all your constituents, not just the ones who voted for you or those who think as you do or those who paid your election expenses. I hope that humility will be the watch word for this day, not proclamations of public mandates and who was proven right.
