TV Q&A: Lupe Velez’s flicks out on DVD

You have questions. I try to have answers.

Will Lupe Velez be back on TV with the films she made with Leon Errol back in the 1940s?

Oh, there’s a story to tell. For those of you tuning in late, Velez (1908-1944) was a dancer and actress little known today — but a beautiful, fiery personality on and off screen in her time. She was romantically linked to silent-film star John Gilbert and to Gary Cooper, among others, and had a stormy marriage to Johnny Weissmuller, the swimming star who was the best known of the movie Tarzans. TMZ would have embraced her every move.

The “Mexican Spitfire,” as she was known, won praise for her movie work, which began in 1926. But for many of us, she was known primarily for a series of comedies she made with actor Leon Errol, which at one time seemed to get endless replays on television. The series, which had Velez playing a woman named Carmelita, began with “The Girl From Mexico” in 1939.

While I have not seen a current listing of telecasts of her movies, Warner Bros. has an eight-movie DVD set called “The Mexican Spitfire Collection.” You can order it through www.wbshop.com and Amazon.com.

My question is about the actress who plays Elaine on the ABC series “Resurrection.” She looks different this season than Season 1. Is it the same actress?

Samaire Armstrong has played Elaine Richards since the series began.

Is David Muir of “ABC World News Tonight” married? How many children does he have?

Muir, who succeeded Diane Sawyer on ABC’s flagship newscast, is single and without children. A Syracuse.com profile said Muir “wears all the appearances of being married to his job. He tried having a dog in New York City. That lasted a week.” (Pet lovers, note that he did find the dog another home.)

Did “Mike & Molly” get canceled?

No. CBS has just held back the comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell for later this season. But you can find McCarthy on the big screen now in “St. Vincent” with Bill Murray.

I am curious as to whether or not “Justified” is coming back to FX.

It is, for a final season, in January. And, besides its fine core cast, it is adding a couple of impressive actors in recurring roles: Sam Elliott and Garret Dillahunt. Both Dillahunt and Justified star Timothy Olyphant were in the much-missed HBO series “Deadwood.”

My friends and I all enjoy watching “Hollywood Game Night” and playing along. Has it been renewed? Does it have a regular time slot or is it just used to fill in holes in the schedule?

NBC has ordered a 10-episode, third season of the series hosted by Jane Lynch.

Production is scheduled to resume early in 2015 for telecasts that summer. While it often aired on Thursday nights, it has shown up other places on the network schedule. When all else fails, after all, NBC can hope the audience will be drawn to a combination of celebrities, silliness and (the show so often claims) alcohol.
