Families planning to cut their own Christmas tree from the Gifford Pinchot National Forest will be able to buy cutting permits starting Wednesday, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Tree-cutting permits, which are valid for one-time use only, will sell for $5 each. There is a limit of five permits per household, according to the forest service.

Officials cautioned visitors to be prepared for winter conditions when venturing into the forest for a Christmas tree.

People purchasing a permit will receive a map of cutting areas and an information sheet with instructions, according to the forest service.

Permits can be purchased at a variety of locations, including the Gifford Pinchot National Forest headquarters at 10600 N.E. 51st Circle in Vancouver. Permits will also be sold through the Amboy Market and Chelatchie Prairie General Store in Amboy, plus multiple locations in Cowlitz and Skamania counties.

A full list of vendors is available online at www.fs.usda.gov/giffordpinchot.
