Rebate increasingly likely for Oregon taxpayers

SALEM, Ore. — State economists provided another rosy outlook of Oregon’s economic recovery Thursday, saying it will not take much more improvement to trigger rebates to taxpayers.

They gave a quarterly forecast to lawmakers and state officials and said they have not changed their upbeat view of how Oregon is bouncing back from the Great Recession.

The economists say job growth has spread beyond the Portland metropolitan area to Salem, Bend and Eugene, the Statesman Journal reported.

The expectation is that the state will continue to add jobs at a rate faster than the nation at large.

Oregon’s one-of-a-kind rebate law requires that when revenue exceeds projections by more than 2 percent, the extra money is kicked back to taxpayers.

Whether the checks actually go out will depend on how income tax collections end up for the year.
