LAKEWOOD — They clawed, they scratched and they lost. But the members of the Woodland volleyball team still have more fighting to do at the Class 2A state tournament.

The Beavers dramatically lost to the North Kitsap of Poulsbo in a tension-filled state quarterfinal match in four sets. They lost in the final set 29-27, staving off multiple match-points.

The Beavers fought back after trailing in the fourth set 17-12 to have a chance to send the match into a fifth set, leading 25-24.

But North Kitsap’s attack just proved to be too much for the Beavers to stop on Friday at Pierce College Fort Steliacoom.

The Beavers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a winning a close first set. However, Vikings made some adjustments and their style eventually wore on the Beavers.

The faster tempo of the Vikings caught the Beavers off guard and kept them off for most of the game.

“We were late; we were touching everything on our side and deflecting,” Woodland coach Jeff Nesbitt said. “There’s balls that we should have been up and in and blocking. So yeah we haven’t seen that really style of offense a whole lot this year.”

The loss moves the Beavers to the consolation bracket where they will face Fife in a fifth-place semifinal Saturday at 11 a.m.

“The last two years in 1A, we got within one match short of bringing the trophy home,” Nesbitt said. “You know it would be pretty awesome to pull that out of the hat this year. It’d be awesome.”

Woodland opened the day with a tough five-set win over East Valley of Spokane, winning 25-27, 25-22, 25-20, 15-25, 15-12.

Ridgefield lost to Fife in its state opener, 26-24, 25-16, 17-25, 25-23. But the Spudders rebounded in the consolation bracket by beating White River 26-24, 23-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-12.

The Spudders will face East Valley in a seventh-place semifinal at 9 a.m. Saturday.
