The Free Clinic of Southwest Washington has received a $50,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to support its adult dental program.

The Free Clinic is a primary source for the uninsured and underinsured in Clark County for urgent dental care. For some people, the clinic is an alternative to self-treatment or expensive emergency room visits, according to the Free Clinic.

In 2013, the dental program provided 1,375 adult patient visits.

Money from the grant will be used to continue providing cost-effective care that includes assessments, X-rays by an on-site dental hygienist and referrals to one of more than 30 volunteer dentists. Treatment and medications are provided for free to qualifying uninsured patients.

To celebrate the grant, Wal-Mart employees volunteered Friday at the morning medical and dental clinics at the Free Clinic. The volunteer effort was part of a statewide Day of Action for Wal-Mart employees.
