Police cams, Washington public records law clash

BREMERTON — Poulsbo police may stop using body cameras because of a blanket request for all of the video recorded by officers.

Chief Al Townsend says it would take too long to review all of the video recorded in the six months the program has been rolling. The department needs to edit the content to prevent releasing video inside homes and some other situations.

Townsend told the Kitsap Sun police probably cannot continue with the program unless the Legislature changes the public records law for video.

The man requesting the video told the Kitsap Sun he wants police agencies across Washington to upload body cam video to YouTube to show the public how officers operate.

He says police in Seattle and Spokane have asked him to narrow his requests.
