WASHINGTON — An Iowa man, who authorities say had a rifle and ammunition in the trunk of the car he was driving, was arrested near the White House on Wednesday.

R.J. “Renae” Kapheim, 41, approached a Secret Service officer at a checkpoint at 15th and E streets NW just before 1 p.m., Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said. Kapheim said that someone in his hometown, Davenport, had told him to come to the White House, so he drove his 2013 VW Passat all the way there.

In the trunk of the car officers found a .30-30 rifle and more than 40 rounds of ammunition, Donovan said.

He said that Kapheim was charged with possession of an unregistered firearm and may face further charges.
