Letter: Only wrong direction is voting rate

Many people are bemoaning the “fact” that “the country is going in the wrong direction.” Let’s take a look. Retained sales and the markets are up. More Americans than ever have health care. Unemployment is at a 6-year low. Fueled by spending and exports, our economy expanded by 3.6 percent. Mortgage interest rates are low. Gasoline prices continue to drop, freeing up more spending money.

The only thing going in the wrong direction is America’s abysmal voting rate. While voting turnout in other countries often reaches 70 percent or higher, in the U.S. the last turnout was the worst in 72 years, a pitiful 36.3 percent. The only thing going wrong in our country is this huge population of uninformed, apathetic citizenry.
