Tesoro Refinery builds fuel rack to fill tanker trucks

The Columbian
Published:

MOUNT VERNON — A $23 million construction project will soon give the Tesoro Refinery in Anacortes the capability to fill fuel tanker trucks.

The truck rack to be located south of the refinery’s main gate on March’s Point Road is under construction and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2015.

Tesoro currently sends finished unleaded gasoline and diesel via pipeline to a nearby Shell rack, said Matt Gill, external affairs senior manager for the plant.

The new facility is expected to increase fuel sales by loading fuel faster than Tesoro does now, said Tersoro Anacortes Terminal Manager Bob Gilbert.

“You always want to control your own supply,” Gill said. “You never want to be reliant on someone else’s operations.”

Gill said Tesoro fuels go to far more gas stations than just those branded Tesoro. He said the difference between gas stations is largely due to additives mixed into the fuel.
