Amid news reports about drone strikes — and even a drone crash — in Yemen, the Defense Department said Monday that Bingen-based Insitu Inc. was awarded a $10.98 million delivery order for one of its ScanEagle systems to be used by the Yemeni government.

The order falls under a previously issued Navy agreement and covers a system that includes “nine ScanEagle Electro-Optics and three ScanEagle Infra-red Unmanned Air Vehicles,” according to the Defense Department. The system comes with a 12-month “sustainment package” that includes sending a team to Yemen to activate the system and keeping a field service representative there.

Also Monday, Insitu secured a similar order from the Czech government for $6.76 million. According to the Defense Department announcement, half the work under that contract will be performed in Bingen, and the other half in Afghanistan. Insitu is a subsidiary of Chicago-based Boeing.
