Letter: Millions aided by ACA

The Columbian
Published: October 4, 2014, 5:00pm

John Ley’s Sept. 24 letter, “ACA failing people who need it,” misses the mark by a mile. Millions of Americans have benefited from Obamacare. This includes millions who have accessed new preventive care services, parents keeping children on their policy until age 26, seniors saving billions on the gradual closing of the part D donut hole, and especially those no longer discriminated against due to pre-existing conditions.

Prior to Obamacare, millions of the working poor had little access to health care. Hospitals treating these families passed on the cost to other Americans with private insurance, resulting in tremendous premium increases every year. So far, over 8 million people have purchased private insurance through Obamacare, and 8,500 of them live right here in Clark County. The Kaiser foundation is projecting a 1 to 3 percent increase in premiums next year despite the increased benefits mandated by Obamacare.

Assuring access to health insurance for all Americans is not only a moral imperative but a smart way to benefit our economy and help bring prosperity to our citizens.
