Timbers (10-9-12, 42 points) — Rodney Wallace scored two second-half goals on Saturday to rally the Timbers to a 2-1 win at San Jose that allowed Portland to remain on point behind the Vancouver Whitecaps in the race for the final Western Conference playoff spot. Portland will have Diego Valeri back in the lineup after the designated player was suspended for Saturday’s game for yellow card accumulation. Timbers right back Alvas Powell has been called up by Jamaica’s national team and will not play in this match. Look for Michael Harrington or Jack Jewsbury to start at right back. Ben Zemanski stepped in for injured Will Johnson and played a strong match alongside Diego Chara in midfield.

Earthquakes (6-13-11, 29 points) — The Earthquakes will be without top scorer Chris Wondolowski. The striker on Tuesday was added to the U.S. national team roster ahead of matches Friday against Ecuador and Oct. 14 against Honduras. Wondolowski scored three goals in two matches against Portland this season, and his 14 goals are by far the most for San Jose. Also on international duty are defender Victor Bernardez, midfielder Cordell Cato and forward Atiba Harris. Defender Pablos Pintos is suspended. Quakes goalkeeper Jon Busch leads the league with 168 saves and has been very good in two matches against Portland. He made 10 saves in a 3-3 draw Sept. 7 at Portland. Wallace’s two goals on Saturday both came from deflections.
