PORTLAND — A Portland mother is upset that her 8-year-old special needs son was able to walk away from Woodlawn Elementary School.

Police found the third-grader Monday a mile-and-a-half away at a Wendy’s restaurant where he went because he wanted a cup of water with ice.

Tamberlee Tarver told KOIN the school called her to say her son was missing and she had to tell them to call police. Police said they had reports of a child walking down Interstate 5.

Portland Public Schools spokeswoman Christine Miles says it has safety protocols in place and it’s investigating to see what happened at Woodlawn.
