Go: Ideas for your weekend — Hop Harvest Beer Days, Lantern Tour, Pet Expo

1. Sip of the harvest

Hops freshly harvested from the vine help create seasonal beers that are only available for a brief period. The Hop Harvest Beer Days Festival will celebrate these autumnal brews created by Washington and Oregon brewers, along with live entertainment and food. Participating breweries include Elysian, Ghost Runners, Hopworks, Loowit, Seven Brides and Walking Man. The festival runs 4:30 to 9 p.m. Oct. 10 and noon to 9 p.m. Oct. 11 at Turtle Place Park, Seventh and Main streets, Vancouver. 2. History by night

Candles will be relit as the annual Lantern Tours return to Fort Vancouver. A park ranger will guide visitors on a lantern-lit tour of the fort’s palisade and nine buildings as costumed performers provide historical vignettes. Reservations are required for the tour, and tours are recommend for ages 10 and older. The Lantern Tours will be twice a month select Saturday evenings through February 2015. This month’s tours will begin at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 11 and 25. Tours cost $10, and $7 for ages 10 to 15. Call 360-816-6232 or visit www.nps.gov/fova.

3. Celebrate pets

Second Saturday will celebrate Adopt-a-Dog Month with hands-on activities and crafts. Children can meet pups in training to be guide dogs for the blind with the Humane Society for Southwest Washington. Second Saturday will run 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Water Resources Education Center, 4600 S.E. Columbia Way, Vancouver. Families also can check out the Portland Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 11. This event, dedicated to pets, will be filled with obedience demonstrations, products and an appearance by Shorty Rossi of the television show “Pit Boss.” The event includes an adoption event featuring multiple rescue groups. The Portland Pet Expo takes place at Portland Expo Center, 2060 N. Marine Drive, Portland. Admission is free and parking is $8. Visit www.portlandpetexpo.com.

4. Love over hate

Inspired by a true story, “The Women of Lockerbie” follows an American mother who sets out in search of her son’s remains after Pan Am Flight 103 crashed into the mountains of Scotland. Instead, she finds a group of local women who are fighting political pressure so they can honor the victims by washing the clothes of the dead and returning them to victims’ families. Magenta Theater Company will perform the play at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10-11 and Oct. 15-17; and 2 p.m. Oct. 11 and Oct. 18 at Magenta Theater, 606 Main St., Vancouver. Tickets are $13 to $16. 5. Battle Ground screening

Dan Russell, Olympic wresting coach and pastor, will speak as part of the documentary screening of “Battle Ground: Tougher Than Hell,” which followed Russell as he coached fighter Alex Bubb on battles in and out of the ring. Guest attendees include Todd Hoffman of “Gold Rush,” author Spike Walker and UFC fighter Chael Sonnen. The premier begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at Chief Umtuch Middle School, 700 N.W.
