This date in October always reminds me of the powerful Columbus Day Windstorm of 1962 — one that I will remember forever. Goodness, more than one-half century later and we are still talking about it. October can be a month to produce strong storms often aided by remnants of old typhoons out in the far western Pacific.
OK, the weather news. You have all day today and perhaps early Monday to get things ready for winter. Cut the grass, clean the gutters, bring lawn furniture in, etc. If you are a weather observer, clean out your rain gauge. I did mine the other day, and it was full of spider webs. There was even a yellow jacket hiding inside my tipping bucket rain gauge.
We had a glancing blow from a weak but fast-moving weather system late Friday night into Saturday. Rainfall was light for the most part locally. In the afternoon several thunderstorms popped up in the far reaches of Clark County into Cowlitz County. Tyler Mode of Battle Ground reported thunder and even a couple of midday rainbows Saturday.
Active weather moved through Puget Sound as well, with reports of funnel clouds and a waterspout in Pierce County. Heavy showers were reported with more than 1 inch of rain in some locales. It was partly sunny most of the day at my home in Salmon Creek. I picked up just 0.14 inch of rain as of 5 p.m.
