Letter: Legislator fought hard for funds

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, for her tireless effort on behalf of the ports of Ilwaco and Chinook. We were facing a serious problem with our entrance channels silting in and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lacked the funds to maintain these federally authorized channels. The crab fleet was having difficulty accessing Bell Buoy Crab in Chinook and the tuna fleet was having difficulty accessing Jessie’s in Ilwaco.

Herrera Beutler fought hard in Congress to get $42.5 million set aside for small ports across the country. She knew this would be for naught, unless the House and Senate could pass a budget, so she then fought hard for a budget. Once this happened these funds actually materialized, but we had to compete with more than 900 small ports for a share, so she again fought for us. This time it was to get the ports of Ilwaco and Chinook at the top of the Corps of Engineers Work Plan. The result was $930,000 to dredge the Chinook channel and $876,000 to dredge the Ilwaco channel. The Chinook dredging has just been completed and the Ilwaco dredging is about to begin.

This would have never happened without her efforts on our behalf.
