Oregon Iron Works gets Bay Area job

Oregon Iron Works, which operates a manufacturing plant in Vancouver, said Friday that it has been chosen as a steel fabricator for San Francisco’s Transbay Transit Center. The $1.9 billion center, which some are calling the “Grand Central Station of the West,” is one of the West’s largest transit projects and is expected to generate over 7,000 jobs at the site and through off-site contractor work, Oregon Iron Works said in a news release.

The company, based in Clackamas, Ore., and a subsidiary of Vigor Industrial in Portland, did not release the dollar amount of the contract nor the number of jobs it will generate. The company said in May that it had about 100 employees in Vancouver location at 3515 S.E. Columbia Way.

Oregon Iron Works said it will fabricate structural steel frames incorporating castings and 32-inch diameter heavy wall pipe framing systems for the Transbay Transit Center, to be built at First and Mission streets.

“Oregon Iron Works is honored to have been chosen as a subcontractor for this visionary project,” said Tom Hickman, vice president sales and marketing, in a news release. “Heavy, high complexity steel fabrication delivered to exacting specifications is not only a major focus for our business but also a point of pride for our teams.”

The work is being managed by the Transbay Joint Powers Authority. Webcor/Obayashi is the general contractor. Skanska USA is a subcontractor for the structural steel package, and Oregon Iron Works is subcontracted to Skanska USA.

The Transbay Transit Center/Caltrain project includes construction of the new terminal, extending Caltrain commuter rail service by 1.3 miles with accommodations to serve as the northern terminus of a high-speed rail line to Southern California; and development of a transit-friendly neighborhood with 3,000 new homes and mixed use development, the San Francisco County Transit Authority says on its website.

The total program budget is currently estimated at $4.5 billion in year-of-expenditure dollars.
