The 15-year-old Hudson’s Bay High School sophomore struck by a school bus is recovering from back surgery, according to a friend of the family.

Kelcie Huntley was crossing the street at East McLoughlin Boulevard and Grand Boulevard about 7 a.m. Monday when she was hit by the Vancouver Public Schools bus.

Huntley’s injuries are not life-threatening, according to officials. Anne Rogge, a Girl Scouts troop leader who knows the family, said the teenager suffered a broken pelvis, damage to her back and facial fractures.

Rogge set up a website to collect donations and help the family offset medical costs. It is important to Huntley’s mother, Rogge wrote in an email, that people know, “Kelcie is a good kid and was simply walking to school.”

Although Huntley is covered by insurance, Rogge wrote, ‘her family has no financial resources to draw upon in this situation.” Donations to help the Huntley family can be made at: www.gofundme.com/helpkelsiehuntley.

Cmdr. Dave King with the Vancouver Police Department could not say on Monday if the student was in a crosswalk.

Pat Mattison, spokeswoman for the Vancouver school district, said the school bus driver will be placed on leave during the investigation. The bus driver, who’s been with the district for 18 years, also will be tested for drugs and alcohol use.

As part of the ongoing investigation, a commercial vehicle inspector with the Washington State Patrol inspected the bus.

The third week in October is School Bus Safety Week in Washington.
